Language teaching requires not only the knowledge but also understanding of the context. It also demands creativity, adaptability and flexibility skills. The upcoming conference will have a theme that focuses on how to contextually teach English language. It will give the conference participants the opportunity to discover new understanding, techniques and methods of language teaching in low resource contexts like Ethiopia.

Sub-Themes of the conference

The sub-themes of the conference include:

Teaching vocabulary in context

Teaching grammar in context

Teaching the four skills in context

Teaching an integrated lesson in context

Teaching English with little or no resources

Teaching English using appropriate technology. For example, mobile phones

How to make English lessons interactive Using appropriate interaction patterns in the English classrooms

Teaching English in a multi lingual context

The use of L1 in ELT Incorporating the mother tongue languages in schools to enhance the teaching of English

Conference Schedule

The conference is going to be held for two days – the 2nd and 3rd of May 2020. There will be 4 plenary sessions and more than 20 presentations. There will also be an exhibition centre for partner organizations on both days.

Conference Format

As sessions vary in format, presenters are advised to state their preference and the relevance of their presentation to the conference theme or sub-themes in their proposals. We are looking for practical examples and lessons learnt in a low resource context. What we want is for teachers to get practical ideas from the conference so that they can use them in their classes after the conference.

Paper presentations are best practices that have been tried and tested in a context similar to Ethiopia. It will include a bit of theory as well. They are 45minutes long followed by15minutes Q&A.

Workshops are 1hour long. These sessions are interactive and demonstrate a lesson which went well. It will be completely practical and no theory. A maximum of two people can present.

Guidelines for Proposal Submission

  1. Proposals should be sent to abaynehhaile@gmail.com before 16th March 2020.
  2. The proposal must not exceed 250 words.
  3. Acronyms and/or abbreviations should be spelled out.

Evaluation of proposals

All proposals will be reviewed by the executive committee of EELPA on the basis of the following criteria:

  2. Direct relevance to the conference theme and sub-themes
